| Q: | I have heard that disabled people can get a car through the motability scheme, what is this and how can I apply? |
| A: | The motability scheme is only available to people who either receive the higher rate of mobility allowance of Disability Living Allowance or the War Pensioners Mobility supplement. The scheme allows you to lease or buy a car, scooter or powered wheelchair using some or all of your mobility allowance. If you choose to lease a car with your payments, this will include insurance, roadside recovery and regular servicing. You do not have to be the person who will be driving the car, you can specify 2 other people who will use the car to drive you. A wide range of car dealerships participate in the scheme, and will help you choose the car specific to your needs and also help you with your application. Depending on the model you choose, you may also have to make an initial payment in addition to your monthly mobility allowance. More information can be found at the Motability Website - www.motability.co.uk or you can telephone them on 0845 456 4566 or textphone 01279 632273 |
